I know of one very successful stock photographer who uses a Nikon D5100 and 35mm f/1.8 lens and gets amazing photos for stock. I, personally, couldn't do that because of the diversity of my subject matter. I think that in addition to a 50mm f/1.4, I would look to adding one of the very inexpensive kit lenses that usually come with some of the new Nikon camera offerings. This way you could rely mostly on the 50mm, but have some versatility to your outfit when you need it. Since I wrote this post, Nikon has come out with the 24mp D3200. It comes with a kit lens at a very reasonable price, and that, or a D5100 would me sufficient to begin a career shooting stock.Tom Grill:https://www.blogger.com/profile/06149972936838234537noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4314955855359002006.post-24986773576596565122012-03-12T15:27:21.396-04:002012-03-12T15:27:21.396-04:00I suppose the difficult thing here is deciding WHE...I suppose the difficult thing here is deciding WHERE to start! It's easy to say that eventually I want a d7000 and a d800 and a 70-200 and a 135 dc... you get the picture! I imagine perhaps starting off with a d7000 and a 50mm 1.4 (portraits, shallow depth of field, sharp - so versatile) and perhaps a speedlight and diffuser. Would I miss out on much - sure: macro, telephoto, wide angle, focus speed (and more). But what I want to know is, would this combo give me enough versatility to begin my journey as a stock photographer? Would I be better off than I currently am with my Panasonic LX3 and no flash? Could I theoretically get enough depth in my portfolio with just this simple combination of gear? Any comments? Thanks, Wes.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
